BMW 5 Series

Are you looking for a 2011 BMW 5 Series?

Q: What is the average cost of maintenance on the BMW E34 5-series?
I’m wondering roughly how much parts cost for a early or mid-90’s BMW E34 5-series such as the 525i. How much do parts cost compared to other manufacturers? If you own an E34, do you find that maintenance is comparable to other brands?
Thanks in advance!

A: nice drivers, and decently (but not outstanding) dependable…but be forewarned cost of routine servicing is at the top of the scale (generally 1.5 to 2X american or japanese product).
replacement parts are more expensive, by a wide margin, than you might expect to pay for other brands.
if you are on a budget -unless you have the skills and toolsets (special) required to do some of your own servicing and general repairs/replacements, i would seriously look at a much newer bmw
or consider for the same money as the 525i, a later model lexus….which rank much higher on dependability scales than german manufactures (the germans consistently score relatively low on dependability) and are a notch lower for costof maintenance and repair.

Q: How to maintain a 2006 BMW 5 series?
I am about to buy a 2006 5 series with 51,000 miles on it. What do I have to do to keep it running great? What should I ask before buying it as far as recent maintenance goes?

A: Before you buy, you should:

1. Run a CarFax report to get some background history.
2. Ask for the car’ maintenance records
3. Do a through test drive
4. If you’re mechanically inclined, check all of the fluids under the hood, if not TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC. If they owner won’t let you, then look elsewhere.
5. Check for recalls
6. Check for tire wear, rust, interior wear (if these are unusually high, odometer could have been rolled back).
7. See if Service 1 has been done. It should be done at 35 or 40K miles, I believe.

Q: How to connect iPod to 2008 5 series BMW?
I just got a 2008 5 series BMW. I am trying to connect the iPod so that I can interface it with iDrive. My iPod has about 60G of songs on it. After several hours of iPod plugged in, it still does not integrated correctly with iDrive.

Instead of showing Playlists, artists, genre, etc., it just shows multi letter characters…. so I can’t search for songs. When a song plays, the song details do appear.

Am I doing something wrong? Does it take like 20 hours or something?

A: I haven’t heard of anyone having this problem. However, BMW offers lots of instructions and FAQ’s on their website.

If you haven’t been to this site you should check it out. It should be very helpful.

Q: What would it cost to fix brakes and struts on a1982 BMW 5-Series Sedan ?
I dont even know what struts are..but im looking at a used car and wondering if its worth buying if it needs brakes and struts..
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

A: Struts serve a similar function to shocks, in that they keep your car from bouncing up and down when you go over bumps… or more correctly, they keep the TIRE from bouncing up and down after it hits a bump.

You’re probably in for $400 or $500 per wheel on that car. Maybe more, probably not less.

Brakes are going to depend on whether or not you just need brake pads (relatively cheap) or rotors. (the part the pads clamp on to.) If the rotor needs replaced on all four wheels, forget about it. It’ll cost a ton.

You can get free appraisals for all of this at the shop, probably with just a call if you ask for the variations. A good idea.

Q: What are the differences b/w 3 series and 5 series bmw?
Looking into them to buy a car, but I want to know if it’s worth the extra money to get a 5 series over a 3 series… are there any big differences or do they just add a few features to sell the car at a higher price? Thanks!

A: Lol your question has already been asked several times as you can see:

But here’s a helpful answer:

Hope I could help! (PS. Generally, one’s more luxurious and bigger than the other as well as some MPG and engine pluses I think).

Help answer my car question please?

Q: which BMW 5 series sedan is better and why?
Im in the process of purchasing a BMW 5 series sedan but i’m not completely sure which sedan I adore more! Which 5 series is better and why? I would like to hear from people who have a BMW or people who Know someone with a BMW 5 series

Thank You

A: Every 5 series sedan in general has the same frame, body panels, and interior. The differences are mainly the engine choice, all wheel drive, or the M5 which has lots of subtle changes to make it sportier and more exclusive.

Then engines available are the 3 liter base engine, the 3 liter turbocharged engine, the 5 liter V-8, and the 5 liter V-10 in the M5. The the larger or turbocharged engines cost more and have worse gas mileage, but are more rewarding when you press on the gas.

There is also the all-wheel drive option which is useful if you frequently have snow during the winter or often drive snow covered roads. If the car won’t be driven over snowy roads, then it is just extra money and weight added to the car that don’t do much.

Lastly, there is the M5, which is almost like a different car altogether. The car is still very comfortable to drive in, but is more oriented towards “enthusiastic driving” or the people who want a more exclusive car.

To give you even more options, there are various option packages that can be ordered for any of the cars. The point in all these options is so that you can get a car that best fits your budget and lifestyle. A good BMW dealer will normally be very happy to explain all the options and give you a test drive.

Good luck!

Q: Lexus ISF or BMW 5 series WHICH SHOULD I BUY?
Well actually which should my DAD buy
we have seen both at the dealerships and we can’t decide!

We need opinions!

A: They are both great cars, but are in different categories if you ask me. The Lexus IS-F is an amazing car, it is very refined, safe, and fast. The same goes for the 5 series. BUT, they are different types of cars. The Lexus is a high performance car. Whereas the 5 series is a lless agressive sedan. Trus it has good power and can have a sporty feel, but it’s just not the same. It all depends on what kind of car u are looking for.

And to be completely honest, for just 1 or 2 thousand more I would go for a Mercedes Benz C63!

Q: Is a 2006 used BMW 5 series sedan a good buy?
I’m thinking about buying a 525i or xi or 530i or xi. Is the car reliable? What kind of maintenance costs should I realistically expect? I’m hearing different answers….. The car would have around 35 to 40k miles on it when I buy it.

A: generally bmw’s are well designed and well assembled but in terms of dependability their ratings are only average or below average….and certainly far below lexus, infiniti, acura.
additionally cost of routine service, maintenance and repairs/replacement parts is at the top of the scale (as much as 1.5 – 2 X cost of japanese and american product), so you should be prepared for relatively high cost of long term ownership.
in terms of your target…the 5 series is a very decent car, particularly the 2002-2003 525i’s and 540 series seem to have better reliability than many of the bmw line…and they are very decent driving cars, although performance is a touch lacking.

Q: What do “Home Lights” mean on the BMW 5 series iDrive menu?
If you go into info, vehicle settings and then lights you will see home lights and next to that it says “40 s”? What does all this mean? Thank you.

A: Hi qpr,

Home lights or more commonly known as “Follow me home lights” is a feature where you can turn the main beam lights on whilst you say get to your front door and they will turn off by themselves.

For example, you pull in your drive and stop. Flash the main beam stalk and the main beam lights will come on (after you have removed key from ignition).Get out and lock the car as you would. The lights then aid you getting to your house door and being able to see better to unlock it etc. The lights will then go out by themselves after the time period you have set (in this case 40 seconds).

You can adjust the time to be as much as 3+ minutes if required.

Good luck, Pyth

Q: What’s it like to drive a BMW 5 Series, new shape?
I am considering buying a 2006 BMW 525d so all your advice welcomed.

A: they are good cars but the i-drive dial is bloody awful, thats what probably made the above comment mum to crash,,

ithe i-drive is probably the worst thing about the 5 series bmw, its a ashame that the sat nav, radio etc etc is all controlled by the i-drive, it should be name i-distract

Q: I have a 2000 bmw 5 series and when i drive home from school i mess up my car going over speed bumps?
i have to go over 2 speed bumps to get out of the parking lot.
i go over them slow and the bumps scrap the bottom of my car.
is they any tips to go over them or something. and there is no way i can just go around them

A: I think if you go over the speed bump like 45 degree cutting side way slowly ,you should be able to avoid getting your bumper scraped. Basicly avoid driving face straight to the speed bump.

Q: Has anyone else had problems with BMW Series 5 parking sensors?
BMW5 been back to garage 4 times as Parking sensors fail. This is on a 2005 model, bought & owned from new.

A: pick me as best answer and gain 3 points!!!

Q: whats better a 1999 cadillac deville or a 1995 bmw 5 series?
i want a good reliable luxry car im 17 got about 3500$ im gonna spend when the time comes what can i get that is a nice car luxry mabe a little fast and a reliable car i was wondering whats better a 1999 cadillac devile or a 1995 bmw 5 series i want leather interior with heated seats etc… those where the 2 i had in mind

A: honestly neither of them are reliable, the only decent 5 series is a e39(96- 03) with a inline 6 (525,528,530) stay away from the 540!!!!! and dont mess with caddys

Q: What are the maintenance cost of a BMW 3-Series (E46 or E90) or a BMW 5-Series (E60)?
I don’t mean with the warranty and complementary maintenance plan. I mean the actual cost.
Just general individual cost of things like an oil change, Inspection 1, Inspection 2, Brake Pads, etc. I would also like the cost of Dealer vs. Independent Garage if possible.

A: That depends on if you get the dealer to fix it or if you have your own BMW certified mechanic to fix it. One reason that BMW repairs are so high is that, Like Mercedes Benz, all dealers have to sign an agreement that no matter what’s wrong with a part, they must replace it. For example, when I had a Benz, I noticed that my wiper had slowed down quite a bit, the Benz dealer told me that they had to replace the wiper motor at a cost of $900.00. I took it to independent Benz repair shop and they fixed it for $60.00. They told me there was some sludge in the motor and they cleaned it out. I kept the car about 3 more years and never had another problem with the motor.

Q: I am going to buy a used car, which one is better mercedes C280 or BMW 5 series or Audi A4?
I am new. This is my first car. I want a luxury car and am confused which one will give less problem in the long run. I ran CARFAX on some cars on a website and the BMW shows lots of servicing done. Is it a bad sign?

A: I recommend getting hold of a Consumer Reports mag that has the used/new car section in it.

I have personally found that guide to be pretty darned good. Two cars that we’ve owned were listed as “used cars to avoid” – and they were right on target with what the problems were!

I don’t know what years you’re talking about, but according to CR, Mercedes just isn’t a good bet, period. Even my BIL, who is rolling in the money, got rid of his due to high repair bills.

I have a 3 series BMW so don’t know much about the 5 series, but I think it would be ok.

The A4 seems to have a pretty good track record – I personally would recommend that slightly more than the BMW. It might be a little less expensive as well.
